The American Academy of Periodontology estimates that around 75% of adults in the US suffer from gum disease.

Gum disease is also called periodontal disease or periodontitis. It starts out in the beginning stages as gingivitis. Gingivitis is the inflammation and redness of the gumlines that occurs when plaque is not thoroughly removed through proper brushing and flossing.

This allows biofilm and tartar to build up under the gumlines. These bacteria cause the immune system to attempt at ridding the body of an infection, resulting in detached gum tissue and bone loss around the teeth. This more advanced stage is periodontal disease, or gum disease. Gum disease can worsen to the point that so much attachment is lost that tooth loss occurs as a result. Symptoms of gum disease include:

• Swollen gums
• Bleeding during brushing or flossing
• Gums that are bright red or purple
• Bad breath
• Loose teeth, or teeth that have moved
• Gum recession
• Tenderness
